Shrimp Farming: A Key to Sustainable Aquaculture and Climate Resilience

Project summary

CLIMATE CHANGE MITIGATION

WP1: Data collection

WP1 focuses on developing and implementing effective monitoring strategies for riverine ecosystem health and GHG emissions in the Mekong.

WP2: Citizen science

WP2 aims to develop and disseminate a novel application framework of explainable artificial intelligence (XAI) and citizen science to achieve practical solutions for reducing GHG emissions and water pollution from shrimp farms.

CLIMATE CHANGE ADAPTATION

WP3: Pilot study

WP4: Socio-economic survey

WP3 involves a pilot study in which we apply the solutions derived from WP2 to three case studies. In these studies, the most suitable solutions will be applied and then evaluated based on their cost, feasibility, effectiveness, and impact on stakeholders.
We will also survey the socio-economic impact of CC that shrimp farmers have experienced so far in the Mekong via a survey questionnaire, which will be divided into four sections, including demographics, farming practices, CC experiences, and adaptation strategies.

CLIMATE CHANGE EDUCATION

WP5: Workshops

WP6: MOOCs

Three workshops are organized in this project with two main goals: 1) to disseminate project results; and 2) to raise the awareness of GHG emissions from shrimp farming and the potential mitigation measures.
We develop massive open online courses (MOOCs) focusing on 3 themes: (1) water and GHG monitoring in shrimp farms and rivers; (2) solutions for water pollution from shrimp farms; and (3) solutions for climate-smart shrimp farming.
